MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/23/12) - The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a 314 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Monday, finishing the three-day tournament's opening round in sixth place among 11 teams.

The Red Wolves were led by Christian Helmbold, who carded a 74 to finish the day tied for fourth place and just three strokes behind leader Ty Spinella of North Texas.

A-State ended the first round three strokes behind fifth-place Louisiana-Lafayette and within eight strokes of third-place South Alabama.  North Texas and Middle Tennessee currently stand tied for first place after both teams shot a 298.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, Cory Williamson is tied for 28th place with a 79, Chris Pledger tied for 32nd with an 80, Chance Holden tied for 37th with an 81 and Sawyer Radler is in 49th place with an 85.

The tournament's second round will be played Tuesday.
