JONESBORO, Ark. (10/20/11) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team secured a berth in the 2011 Sun Belt Conference with a 1-1, double-overtime tie against North Texas Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The Red Wolves moved to 6-9-3 on the season with a 4-5-1 league mark. North Texas took its second tie in league action moving to 7-1-1 on the season in league play and 12-4-2 overall.
The game was held scoreless until North Texas connected on a goal in the 63rd minute (62:44) when Kelsey Hodges took a corner kick from Ellen Scarone and took a shot in traffic to break the scoreless tie.
Michele Clark then scored for the Red Wolves with less than five minutes remaining in the match (85:42) when she scored on a rebound from a shot from Kara Nitti.
The Mean Green had an opportunity to win the game with just 48-seconds remaining in the contest when Scarfone took a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box. But Scarfone’s shot hit the post rebounding out.
“I can’t be more proud of the effort that my girls put forth,” said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. “What you have to keep in mind is this is an excellent team we played against and a team that is in the top two in the conference standings right now. For us to come back from behind and equalize with so few minutes left shows you the fight that my girls have in them.”
ASU was outshot in the contest 24-18 by the Mean Green, but ASU took 11 shots on goal to North Texas’ nine.
The Red Wolves defense came up big in the contest as starting defenders Stasha Siers, Lizzy Niles and Ashley McMurtry each recorded a team save for the Red Wolves, while Megan Stoltzfus was solid in net making five saves in the game.
Siers also surpassed a milestone at ASU, as she started in her 74th career contest taking sole possession of the No. 1 spot on the ASU career leader board.
Kara Nitti led ASU with five shots, two of which were on goal while Lyndsey Patterson had three shots, all of which were on goal. Hodges and Michele Young led UNT with four shots each.
ASU will complete regular season action at home against UALR on Friday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. against the Trojans.
