"We had a bad start to the match with doubles," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams. "We played well at No. 1, but we were really off at No. 2 and 3. But, I was proud of the girls' effort in singles, because we have struggled all Spring trying to get more than two or three girls to play well in singles against a quality team. However, today everyone fought hard, and we were able to pull out five wins. I hope we can carry the momentum into the conference tournament next week."
The Red Wolves dropped the doubles point, only winning at the No. 1 spot. Elne' Barnard and Rone' van Wyk teamed up to top UALR's Yana Kakovkina and Veronique Luksich 8-2.
ASU bounced back in singles action, taking victories in all but one match. Barnard defeated Luksich 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1, while Jenny Herring posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Anne Weijenborg at No. 2. At the No. 3 spot, van Wyk won in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 over Kakovkina, and Ioana Teu did the same 6-2, 6-2 over Rebec van den Houte at No. 5. Maria Alemán rounded out the Red Wolves' wins at No. 6, topping Nathalia Garay 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
The Red Wolves will travel to New Orleans, La. to wrap up the 2010 season at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament April 22-25.
