DURHAM, N.C. – Four Blue Devils have been selected to the 2013 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams, as announced Monday by the conference office.

Senior Ben Hwang collected the third All-ACC Academic honors of his career, while junior Christine Wixted received the accolade for the second consecutive year. Senior Adam Flur and sophomore Megan McCarroll were each named to the conference academic teams for the first time in their careers. As a program, Duke has placed at least four student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic teams in seven straight seasons.

Flur garnered the first All-ACC Academic honors of his career after advancing to the consolation finals in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle at the 2013 ACC Championships. A public policy major from Durham, N.C., he recorded a personal-best time of 20.38 in the 50 freestyle preliminaries and also competed on the Blue Devils’ 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the conference championships. During the regular season, Flur anchored the 400 freestyle relay to a first-place showing against NC State and helped the 200 freestyle relay take first against eventual ACC champion Virginia. A three-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll heading into his senior year, Flur also served as a team co-captain for the 2012-13 campaign.

Hwang, a sprint specialist from Cerritos, Calif., was named to the All-ACC Academic team for the third consecutive year. Duke’s top performer in the 50 freestyle during the season, Hwang took seventh in the event at the ACC Championships and clocked a personal-best and NCAA Championships provisionally-qualifying cut of 19.77 in the meet preliminaries. He also advanced to the consolation final of the 100 freestyle at the conference championships, in addition to being tabbed the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 9 after sweeping the sprint freestyle races at the season-opening All-North Carolina Invitational. A program record holder in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 medley relay events, Hwang will graduate in May with degrees in international comparative studies and Asian and Middle Eastern studies.

McCarroll was named to the All-ACC Academic team for the first time after closing out the season as the Blue Devils’ top performer in the backstroke events. The native of Portland, Ore., broke a program record at the 100-yard distance with a 54.24 swim in the preliminaries of the ACC Championships. She went on to finish 12th in the conference while also setting a personal record in the 200 backstroke at 1:58.39. This year’s conference championships saw McCarroll, a public policy major and member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll last season, lead off school record-breaking performances by Duke’s 200 and 400 medley relay squads.

An All-ACC performer in the 100 and 200 breaststroke for the second consecutive season, Wixted is making her second appearance on the All-ACC Academic team. The sociology major from Greenwood Village, Colo., established new program records in both events at the ACC Championships, breaking the one-minute barrier in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries with a 59.95 clocking. Wixted also surpassed her own school record twice in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second overall at 2:10.19. She went on to represent the program at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., turning in a pair of top-40 performances in the breaststroke trials. A member of the 2012 ACC Academic Honor Roll, Wixted excelled as a member of the Blue Devils’ relay teams, setting new program records in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays at the ACC Championships.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
