PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Duke earned its first victory of the season by defeating Temple 2-1 on Sunday, August 26 in Philadelphia, Pa.

"I am extremely proud of how this team made the changes necessary to earn this win today," head coach Pam Bustin said. "It was absolutely a team effort that got it done. This dangerous Temple team threw everything they had at us. They truly challenged every aspect of our game, and these Duke Blue Devils responded with confidence and poise. We must move forward and build on the things we learned this weekend."

Six and a half minutes into the first half, senior Chelsea Amsley scored her first goal of the season to put Duke up 1-0. The score was set up by a Blue Devil penalty corner that Amsley inserted which led to a shot by junior Brenna Rescigno which was blocked by Temple Goalie Lizzy Millen but Amsley was able to  collect the rebound and earn Duke's first goal of the season with the put back.

Towards the end of the first half, Temple had its greatest opportunity to get on the board when senior Katie Briglia was awarded a penalty stroke but Duke goalkeeper Lauren Blazing made a great stop on a high shot to keep the Owls scoreless.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Temple evened the score 1-1 when sophomore Amber Youtz scored from the right side of the field.  Four minutes later, Duke responded with a goal of its own, earned by sophomore Jessica Buttinger and assisted by sophomore Martine Chichizola to bring the score to 2-1.  The goal marked the first goal of the season for Buttinger, and the eighth of her career.

The Blue Devils led in several stat columns.  Duke earned 14 shots compared to Temple's ten including six shots on goal to Temple's three.  Duke also earned ten penalty corners which bettered Temple's five.  Defensively, goalkeeper Blazing earned two saves in the victory.

The Blue Devils will come home next Friday, August 31, for their home opener against Princeton.  Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Williams Field Jack Katz Stadium
