For fall sport student-athletes, the spring is a peculiar time. You practice, train and prepare for your coming season, but there is still something missing. The seniors you admired during the fall season are still on campus, but no longer at practice. And the incoming teammates have not yet arrived on East Campus. So here we are, our Duke field hockey squad of a baker’s dozen, preparing for the 2014 season. While taking a short time to enjoy the snow day, we are ready to get back to our full training schedule!
With the loss of eight irreplaceable seniors, we now strive to find the new vibe of Duke field hockey while using the leadership and legacy modeled by the seniors before us.
A couple of weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to have all of the incoming freshmen on campus for a visit. The lively band of six brings a new feel to Duke field hockey with their outstanding accomplishments on the hockey field and in the classroom. Their character and work ethic undoubtedly is composed of what we want to lay on the foundation set last fall. They are worthy additions to the team’s “Duke True” culture.
While we eagerly await their arrival in the coming months, our small gang of a baker’s dozen still puts in the work for the 2014 season. With Duke’s spring tournament rapidly approaching, we are eager to showcase the work we have put in this far against other top teams from the southern region such as UNC, ODU and Virginia. Especially now after a few beautiful practices in 60-degree weather, we can hardly wait!
