COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior epeeist Alessio Santoro continued his breakout season by moving into second place after the first day of the men's portion of the NCAA Fencing Championships Saturday at Ohio State University.

Santoro, making his first career NCAA Championship appearance, went 11-4 through three rounds and trails only St. John’s Yevgeniy Karyuchenko for the top spot. Santoro and fellow epee teammate Dylan Nollner tied for the fewest touches allowed on day one, surrendering just 43 points each. Nollner, who took fifth in last year’s national championships and is making his fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, sits in 13th place with a 7-8 record.

Duke also sent two freshmen to compete at NCAAs, deploying saber Christopher Monti and foilist Joseph Lam in their first trip to the national event. Monti, who led all Duke fencers with a 62-20 record during the regular season, sits in eighth place after day one with a 10-5 mark, while Lam is in 22nd at 4-11.

The performance of those four along with a  12th-place showing from women’s epeeist and All-American Sarah Collins, vaulted Duke into 10th place in the team standings with 43 points. The Blue Devils have the fewest fencers competing (five) of any other program in the top 10.

The four Duke men will complete their competition Sunday with two more four-bout rounds leading into the medal rounds. The top four finishers from each weapon advance to the medal rounds, which is a scenario Nollner missed out on by just one touch in 2013 when he placed fifth. The senior will look to follow the lead of Collins who, after finding herself in last place after the first day of competition, stormed through the second day of competition to climb 12 spots and earn All-America honors.
