Tara Buchanan and Meredith Whitney Earn All-MAC
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference announced its softball All-MAC Teams and Specialty award winners on Tuesday afternoon. Meredith Whitney was named First Team All-MAC as a Utility-Pitcher and Tara Buchanan earned Second Team All-MAC as a First Baseman.
For Buchanan, this is her first all-conference nod after leading the Broncos in MAC play in average (.333), slugging percentage (.729), total bases (35), on-base percentage (.556), RBIs (13), home runs (5) and walks (22).
Whitney, who tied for the team lead in MAC play in runs scored (11) offensively, did most of her work in the circle. She had a 1.59 ERA in conference play, racking up seven wins. She had 10 complete games in her 11 starts and recorded a pair of shutouts. Whitney fanned 109 MAC batters as the opposition hit .200 with her in the circle.
Buchanan is only the second first baseman to earn Second Team All-MAC and the first since Brittney Reist in 2009. Whitney joins Deb Albano as the only Broncos to ever earn First Team All-MAC three times during a career. Albano did it in 1983-85, while Whitney accomplished the feat in 2009, 2011 and this season. She also earned Second Team All-MAC in 2010, becoming the first Bronco to earn All-MAC honors every year of their career.
Western Michigan softball is the No. 5 seed in this week's MAC Tournament and will face No. 8 Toledo on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Akron, Ohio, at Firestone Stadium. WMU is looking to repeat as MAC Tournament champions for the first time in program history.
