DURHAM, N.C. – After starting out as a pitcher his freshman season, senior Mark Lumpa transitioned to the outfield his final two campaigns and thrived as Duke’s leadoff hitter in 2014. Lumpa ranked among the ACC leaders in walks, on base percentage and runs. He also became just the third Blue Devil to draw 50 or more walks in a single season. An ACC Academic Honor Roll selection, he majored in economics with a certificate in markets and management studies. caught up with the Saudi Arabia native. What are your three favorite things about being a Duke student-athlete?
Lumpa: First is just my teammates currently and in the past. It’s great having a group of guys. Secondly I think the outside perception of student-athletes. When I go back home, family members, just people you meet, you tell them you’re a Duke athlete and their mesmerized. It’s awesome seeing that. Last I think just the community as a whole between student-athletes. All sports, we all group together and do things like the Stars Banquet, so it’s awesome. What is your favorite on-field memory?
ML: My personal on-field memory - my sophomore year, first at-bat I ever got, I hit a homerun. But that’s trumped by the UNC sweep. But not only the UNC sweep, beating NC State 2-3 and sweeping Wake Forest, going 8-1 against the teams in North Carolina this year. What is your favorite off-field memory?
ML: It’s got to be just being around the guys for four years, meeting people from all over the world when you go to Duke. What are three things you would like to do in the next 10 years?
ML: First, I’d love to travel. I grew up overseas. I’ve traveled a good amount in my life so far and I want to visit a lot more different places, so that’s the first thing I want to do. Second, I think I’d want to start my own business at some point. Third, I’d like to work in different cities around the world. Not just travelling but actually getting to work in cities like Hong Kong, London, Chicago, New York. Name three people you would like to have dinner with.
ML: So I’m taking a little bit of a different approach to this. My first one is Batman or Bruce Wayne. Both or either, whoever is available. Second, Jennifer Lawrence. She’s real hot right now. Lastly, Ned Stark from Game of Thrones. Or basically any Game of Thrones character. What are three things you would do on an off day?
ML: Definitely going to sleep. Life as a student-athlete, you don’t get to sleep much. You can’t really do this in Durham, but I’d love to go to the beach. I live on the beach at home, so I love going to the beach and reading on the beach. The last thing is movies, I love going to the movies.
