DURHAM, N.C. – The Black team won the hits battle, 10-8, but was unable to push enough runs across for the win, falling 7-4 to the Blue team Friday at Jack Coombs Field in game one of the Duke baseball team’s annual Fall World Series.

Senior Mark Lumpa racked up three RBI on a pair of hits to lead Black. The Udhailiyah, Saudi Arabia, native doubled in the sixth inning and also singled in the ninth. Junior Reed Anthes and redshirt junior Chris Marconcini sparked Blue as the duo teamed up for three hits and three RBI.

Blue scored four runs on two hits and a fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth to take a commanding lead. Redshirt senior Ryan Deitrich added an RBI single in the frame to help the Blue team’s cause.

Blue tacked on another three runs in the sixth to stake a 7-0 advantage. Reed kicked things off with a double, plating senior David Perkins and Deitrich.

Black started to chip away at the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run double off the bat of Lumpa sparked the rally, but junior RHP Dalton Brown induced an Andy Perez out to end the threat.

Freshman David Williams came up with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to help the Black team close the margin to 7-3. Once again, the Blue team’s pitching was able to end the inning without further damage as senior Josh Ruffin got junior Grant McCabe to fly out.

An RBI single from Lumpa in the bottom of the ninth gave Black life, but Ruffin closed out the game with a Matt Berezo fly ball to secure the Blue victory.

Sophomore RHP Michael Matuella was dominant over four shutout innings to earn the win, while freshman Bailey Clark took the loss for Black despite flashing a 93 mph fastball at times.

Game two of the Blue Devils’ annual seven-game series begins Saturday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. from Jack Coombs Field.
