Blue Devils Tabbed No. 2 in Sporting News Poll

DURHAM, N.C.-  The Duke women’s basketball team received its second preseason No. 2 national ranking as the Blue Devils were tabbed second overall in the Sporting News College Basketball magazine that has hit the newsstands.  

The Blue Devils were also No. 2 in the Lindy’s Magazine preseason poll, while being tabbed No. 3 in the USA Today Sports preseason magazine.  

Connecticut was listed No. 1 overall, while Duke, Stanford, Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame,  and Baylor in the top 10.  Closing the top 20 poll was California, Nebraska, Texas A&M, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Dayton, Penn State, Oklahoma State and Purdue.  

The Blue Devils will face eight teams listed in the Sporting News preseason top 20 – Connecticut (1), Kentucky (5), Maryland (7), North Carolina (8), Notre Dame (9), California (11), Oklahoma (15) and Purdue (20).

The Sporting News also released its preseason All-America teams with Duke senior Chelsea Gray and junior Elizabeth Williams on the first team.  

Head coach Joanne P. McCallie and the Blue Devils return all five starters in 2013-14, including 93.7 percent of its scoring off its team that posted a 33-3 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight year.  

Along with returning All-America selections Gray and Williams, Duke welcomes back All-ACC performers Tricia Liston and Haley Peters.  Freshman All-America and ACC Tournament MVP Alexis Jones is the final returning starter for Duke.  A total of 11 letterwinners will return to the squad next season as McCallie enters her seventh season with the Blue Devils.

Duke will get started with its annual Blue/White scrimmage on Sunday, Oct. 27 followed by exhibition contests against Glenville State College (Oct. 30) and Coker College (Nov. 3).  The Blue Devils will open the season on Sunday, Nov. 10 at nationally-ranked California.
