Anasi, who is a product of Arlington, Texas, guided a very inexperienced defense that featured three freshmen at times over the weekend. The Blue Devils allowed a combined 10 shots in the two contests and over the first four matches have surrendered only one goal.
In the Kennesaw State match on Friday, Anasi notched the game-winning goal in the 59th minute as rookie Christina Gibbons found the two-time All-America off an indirect kick as the Blue Devils downed the Owls, 1-0. The goal for Anasi was the third of her career and first since her sophomore campaign. It marked Anasi’s second game-winning goal of her career as well.
Duke closed the weekend with a 1-0 victory over New Mexico and now features three 1-0 wins on the season.
The Blue Devils will next host the Duke Nike Classic on Friday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 8. It will feature four teams ranked in the top 12 nationally – North Carolina (1), UCLA (2), West Virginia (9) and Duke (12). Duke will open the classic on Friday hosting West Virginia at 6:00 p.m., followed by North Carolina and UCLA at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the Tar Heels will take on West Virginia at 11 a.m. and the Blue Devils will host UCLA at 1 p.m.
