DURHAM, N.C.- Duke University incoming freshman Toni Payne is currently traveling with the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team in Gavel, Sweden as it continues its preparation for the qualifying for the 2013 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. Payne will be with the U.S. squad from May 24-June 3.
USA will square off against Sweden’s U-20 Women’s National Team on Friday, May 31 and Sweden’s U-23 Women’s National Team on Sunday, June 2, the same day the U.S. WNT will face Canada in Toronto and the U.S. MNT will face Germany in Washington, D.C. as part of U.S. Soccer’s 100th Anniversary Centennial celebrations.
Both games will be played in Gavle, which is situated on the east coast of Sweden about 125 miles north of Stockholm. Gavle was the site of four of the USA’s six matches in the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Payne, who was recently named the Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year, scored 47 goals and registered 35 assists this past season, leading Oak Mountain High School (22-4-2) to the Class 6A state championship game. Payne was the 2012 Birmingham News Player of the Year. She concluded her prep soccer career with 141 goals and 92 assists.
