DURHAM, N.C.—A dog is a man’s best friend. That became obvious Monday when in the midst of studying for finals, student-athletes were able to take a break and visit with some furry friends during PAWS for Exams.

PAWS for Exams is an opportunity for Duke student-athletes to interact with registered therapy dogs in a stress-free and relaxed environment.  Studies have shown that petting a friendly dog will help lower blood pressure, slows the heart rate down, and releases the tension in the muscles.

This was the second year the dogs came to visit and again was a huge success.  Nearly 100 student-athletes showed up for the event and were able to sense the unconditional love these dogs provided. Aspen and Izzie, golden retrievers, were the first to arrive and spent a total of two hours getting as much attention as they could.

The next two hours were spent with Riley and Dudgen who seemed content with a simple pet or a tight hug from the students. The student-athletes, like the animals, left feeling more relaxed and at ease heading into the pressure cooker of exam week.
