DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke women’s tennis team was awarded Ronald McDonald Charities Duke Student-Athletes of the Week honors on Wednesday after capturing the 2014 ITA National Team Indoors Championship Monday, Feb. 10.
As a team, the Blue Devils opened competition with convincing 4-2 victories over No. 11 Michigan, No. 3 North Carolina and No. 8 California.
In the finals, Duke rallied to upset No. 5 UCLA, 4-3. Each member of the Blue Devil squad contributed on the road to the championship, posting wins over stout competition. The duo of senior Marianne Jodoin and junior Annie Mulholland clinched the doubles point against Michigan and North Carolina, while the tandem of senior Hanna Mar and sophomore Beatrice Capra secured the doubles point against California.
Three different Blue Devils closed out competition with wins in singles, including senior Rachel Kahan earning the clinching point for Duke against the Wolverines, Jodoin upsetting California’s 31st-ranked player in the nation, and Mar capturing wins for Duke in both the quarterfinal and championship rounds against North Carolina and UCLA, respectively.
Freshman Alyssa Smith and junior Ester Goldfeld posted major wins over nationally ranked opponents, as well. The title is the second in school history and the first since 2003.
Duke will next travel back to Charlottesville, Va., to face Virginia on Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m., to open ACC play.
