ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Fred Saba and junior Jason Tahir both advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship with victories in first round action Wednesday, May 21.

Saba, the 44th-ranked player in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Div. I poll, notched an upset over ninth-ranked Ray Sarmiento of Southern California. Saba set the tone early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set en route to collecting a 6-1, 6-1 decision. The win marked the senior’s ninth of the season over a ranked opponent and improved him to 21-9 for the year. He will meet No. 39 Denis Nguyen of Harvard in Thursday’s second round at 12:30 p.m.

Earlier in the day, 32nd-ranked Tahir also got off to a strong start in his first round matchup. The Rochester, N.Y., native defeated No. 49 Raleigh Smith of Northwestern 6-3, 6-3 to move his season ledger to 24-9. Next up, Tahir is set to return to the courts at 9 a.m. Thursday to face No. 35 Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA, who toppled No. 4 seed Mitchell Frank of Virginia Wednesday.

“Everyone in this draw is a great player,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “It was an impressive way to start off with two convincing wins today. Jason and Fred came ready to play and executed their game plans well.”
