DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior Fred Saba of the men’s tennis team was selected the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week after collecting the 100th singles victory of his career Sunday, Apr. 13 in a 7-0 sweep of Georgia Tech.
Saba, the 46th-ranked player in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I poll, went 2-0 in ACC singles action last weekend to help Duke defeat No. 20 Clemson and No. 72 Georgia Tech. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native topped then-No. 99 Dominique Maden of the Tigers in three sets on court two, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Georgia Tech’s Eduardo Segura on Sunday. The senior right-hander owns a season ledger of 18-6 in singles, including a 10-2 mark at the No. 2 position in the lineup.
In doubles, Saba paired with junior Raphael Hemmeler to knock off No. 43 Segura and Carlos Benito of the Yellow Jackets, 8-3. Saba and Hemmeler are listed 69th in this week’s doubles rankings and currently sit at 12-4 for the season and 6-3 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
