Menís Tennis Gives Back on MLK Day

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team participated in the 2013 Duke Martin Luther King Jr. Million Meals Event on Monday morning in the Intramural Building on Duke's West Campus. The Blue Devils were able to package meals for those less fortunate around the world and in the Durham community.

"It was fun getting the team together be a part of the MLK Million Meals Event today on campus," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "There was a great turnout and we helped reach the goal of packaging 80,000 meals for hungry children in developing countries."

The MLK Million Meals program is part of a partnership with worldwide non-profit charity Stop Hunger Now, Inc., as well as the Durham Branch of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. The Blue Devils partnered with other members of the Duke, North Carolina Central and the Durham community to help with a goal of packaging 80,000 meals for young children.

"It was a good experience for us as a team to work together and with people from NCCU and the Durham community," said junior Chris Mengel. "We felt like we got a lot done in our two hours and enjoyed working as a unit as well."

Stop Hunger Now, Inc., is an international relief aid association that coordinates in the distribution of food and emergency needs to families in need around the globe. The meals and daily necessities provided by the Raleigh, N.C., non-profit organization have helped people in need in more than 70 countries. The Durham Branch of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is a local non-profit organization that provides families with meals. Duke will return to the courts to play Middle Tennessee State Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. The Blue Devils will serve as one of 15 host sites for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Jan. 25-27. The winner of the Duke and Middle Tennessee State match will then face the winner of Virginia Tech and Northwestern match in a championship on Saturday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoors Feb. 15-18 in Seattle, Wash.
