ALPHARETTA, GA - The Duke men's golf team, ranked 11th in the Golfstat rankings, shot a 17-over 305 on Friday at the Golf Club of Georgia in the opening round of the United States Collegiate Championship. The Blue Devils are in 14th place entering Saturday's second round of play.
Southern Cal holds the tournament lead after firing a one-over 289 on Friday with Wake Forest and host Georgia Tech two shots back. Oklahoma State (+5, 293) and Virginia (+295) round out the top five and are followed by Auburn (297), UCLA (297), Kent State (297), Washington (297), Clemson (301), Texas A&M (303), East Tennessee State (303), Iowa (304), Duke (305) and Stanford (306).
Taylor Gooch (Oklahoma State) grabbed the individual lead with a four-under 68. Steven Ihm (Iowa) and Michael Johnson (Auburn) are each one shot back with a trio of players two shots back at two-under. Just 11 players in the talented field shot under-par in the opening round at the Lakeside Course (par 72, 7,017 yards) at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Senior Brinson Paolini fired a two-over 74 in the first round to pace the Blue Devils. The Virginia Beach, Va. native, started the round strong with seven pars and one birdie and one bogey in for an even-par opening nine. Paolini collected seven pars and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot 74 and put him in a tie for 22nd place.
Julian Suri, a senior from St. Augustine, Fla., posted an opening round 75. He got off to a strong start with a birdie on the par 5 first hole and parred the next seven holes before making the turn at even-par following a bogey on No. 9. Suri continued his strong play with six straight pars to open the back nine before running into trouble with a bogey on No. 16 and a double-bogey on the par 3 17th hole. He closed the day with a par to sit in a tie for 34th place at three-over (75).
Freshman Mads Soegaard and senior Adam Sumrall each shot six-over 78s on Friday and are tied for 59th. Both players were penalized by a pair of double-bogeys in their respective rounds. Junior Austin Cody is tied for 63rd after shooting a seven-over 79 in the opening round.
