DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke track and field program welcomes 17 freshman to its roster for the 2012-13 seasons.  The impressive group has collectively earned 24 individual state championships and hails from 12 different states across the country.

This group joins the 11 men and women long distance runners who have already begun competing in the 2012 cross country season.  To learn more about the those individuals click on the following links: men l women 

Glynn Chatmon, Jumps
Chicago, Ill. (Pinecrest High School)

Prior to Duke: Two year letterwinner in track and field at Walther Lutheran High School...finished second in the long jump at the 2012 2A division of the Illinois State Track Meet...finished fourth in the long jump at the 2011 1A division of the Illinois State Track Meet...earned 2011 Suburban Christian Conference All-Conference honors...two year letterwinner on the football team where he led the team in tackles and interceptions...member of the National Honor Society.  

Personal: Born September 3, 1994...son of Gary and Alison Chatmon.

Michal Filipczak, Mid-Distance
Niles, Ill., (Maine Township High School South, Park Ridge)

Prior to Duke: Three year letterwinner in track and field at Maine Township High School South, Park Ridge...lettered one season in cross country...named 2012 Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Personal: Born January 25, 1994...son of Dariusz and Monika Filipczak...has one younger sister (Maya)

Michael Foley, Throws
Paradise Valley, Ariz. (Notre Dame Prep)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at Notre Dame Prep...2012 Arizona state champion in the discus...regional champion in the discus (2011) and the hammer throw (2012)...holds the Arizona hammer throw state record with a mark of 215-9...two-time participant in the USA Junior National Meet in the hammer throw...letter one year on the football team as an offensive lineman...third degree black belt Tang Soo Do...member of the National Honor Society.

Personal: Born November 8, 1993...son of Michael Foley and Lisa Dado...has two older sisters (Bonnie and Molly)

Carl Heinz, Jumps
Oak Park, IL (Oak Park River Forest High School)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at Oak Park River Forest High School...named the 2012 Illinois Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year...earned All-America honors in 2012 by placing third in the high jump at the New Balance Nationals...finished second in the high jump at the 2011 New Balance Nationals...four-time all-state honoree (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)...two-time Illinois high jump state champion (2011,2012)...16 time all-conference in the jumping events.

Personal:  Born July 24, 1993...son of Joel Heinz and Brenda Latzke...has one older sister (Naomi).

Jon Michael Hilsheimer, Mid-Distance
Columbus, Ohio (Columbus Academy)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at Columbus Academy...three year letterwinner in cross country...state champion in the 2012 Ohio DIII 800 meter run... member of the 2010 Ohio DIII 4x400m relay state champion and record holding team...member of two-time (2011,2012) DIII 4x800m relay state championship squad...named the track and field team MVP all four years...named the cross country team MVP for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons

Personal:  Born May 18, 1993...son of Larry and Cindy Hilsheimer...has two older sisters (Lauren and Kristina)...served as the student body president.

Nyall Islam, Mid-Distance
Manhattan, N.Y. (The Lawrenceville Prep School)

Prior to Duke: Three year letterwinner in track and field...all-state honorable mention (2011)...all-prep first team indoor and outdoor track in 2011...all prep cross country second team New Jersey (2010)...served as captain of cross country and track and field squads... excelled in the classroom, named AP Scholar with distinction. National Merit Commended scholar. Senior staff writer of the Lawrence, the student newspaper.

Personal: Born September 15, 1993...son of Tahir and Anu Filipczak...has one older sister (Nafeesa) who also attends Duke.

Prior to Duke: Two year letterwinner in track and field at University High School...2012 All Southern-Arizona Honorable Mention...finished ninth in the state decathlon competition...named his high school's 2012 hurdle MVP...regional qualifier in the long jump for Tucson Elite Athletic Club...AP scholar with distinction. 

Personal: Born April 28, 1994...son of Joey Montano and Eva Luz Castro...has one younger sister (Victoria).

Dylan Newman, Mid-distance
Plymouth, Mass. (Boston College High School)

Prior to Duke:  Four year letterwinner in track and field at Boston College High School, serving as captain his senior year...three-time Boston Globe All-Star...two time Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic...2012 Catholic Conference champion in the mile...2012 New England Catholic Champion in the mile, broke the meet record by running a time of 4:26.46...2012 indoor Tri-County league champion in the 1,000m...2011 Catholic Conference champion in the the track, member of student council and National Honor Society...participated in a variety of community service opportunities

Prior to Duke:  Four year letterwinner in track and field at Christian Brothers Academy...freshman indoor and outdoor state champion in the 400m...Outdoor Group Non-Public-A state champion in the 400m intermediate the track, member of National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, CBA Scholar Honors Program and an Eagle Scout.

Personal: Born April 19, 1994...son of Robert and Jackie Rodio...has one older brother (Michael)

Robert Rohner, Multis
Sumter, S.C. (Wilson Hall)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at Wilson Hall...three time All-State in track and field (2010, 2011, 2012)...two-time male athlete of the year (2011 and 2012)...three year letterwinner on the basketball team and lettered two years with the football team...earned All-State honors in basketball during the 2012 season...named 2012 basketball team MVP and the 2012 Most Valuable Defensive Back in football...member of the National Honor Society and student council.

Personal: Born October 13, 1993...son of Mark Rohner and Marcy Gibbons...has two sisters (Amber Ford and Hannah Grace Gibbons)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at William Fremd High School...2011 All-State and All-Sectional honoree...earned All-Conference honors in 2010...recipient of the 2012 Pat Brogdan Award...served as team captain during the 2011 and 2012 seasons...lettered one year on the football team where he played as a wide receiver...A.P. Scholar and member of National Honor Society.

Personal: Born July 1, 1994...son of Jeffery and Diane Vail...has one younger brother (Caleb)...Uncle Rick Beswick graduated from Duke in 1988.

Olivia Anderson, Mid-distance

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in cross country and track and field...five-time Colorado 5A state champion (2009: 300m hurdles, 2010: 300m hurdles, 800m and 4x800m relay, 2012: 4x800m relay)...holds her school records in the 300m hurdles, freshman 4x800m relay, 4x800m relay, 800m, sprint medley relay and 400m...named to the 2012 All-State team...finished 6th in the 2010 Colorado 5A State Cross Country Championship...received her high schools "most outstanding performer" all four years...recipient of the Kirby E. Lyle Honor Athlete Award for outstanding athletic achievement, scholarship, character, leadership, and sportsmanship...member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and National Art Honor Society.

Lee High School...four-time winner of high school's Female Track Athlete of the Year (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)...three time Female Cross Country Athlete of the Year (2009, 2010, 2011)...recipient of 2011 All-District Academic Team and the 2011 S.T.E. M. Scholar Athlete Award...lettered one year on the tennis team...served as president of the National Honor Society her senior year.

Personal: Born August 3, 1994...Daughter of Tony and Lorie Blount...has one younger sister (Alexandra)...mother Lorie ran track at the United States Military Academy from 1982-1986.

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field...Two-time NSSF All-America honors (2011,2012)...2012 Georgia high school state champion and meet record holder...2012 Georgia Indoor All-State...2011 New York state indoor and outdoor champion...2011 Eastern States pole vault champion...2010 New York All-State...2009 Virginia All-State...served as the 2011 team captain...also a four year letterwinner in cheerleading...AP Scholar

Personal: Born June 10, 1994...daughter of COL. Ronald and Simona Clark...has one older brother (Matthew)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner in track and field at Junipero Serra High School...placed third in the pentathlon at the 2010 Junior Olympics...four time California CIF shot put champion (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), 100m hurdle champion (2010) and 4x400m relay champion (2009)...two-time Del Rey league girls MVP (2009, 2010)...2010 NSIC pentathlon champion...four-time scholar athlete of the year honoree (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)...recipient of the 2011 Eugene Profit award, given to the student athlete with the highest GPA.

Personal: Born February 8, 1994...daughter of Robert and Sonya Harrell...has one older brother (Herman) and one older sister (Amaria).

Prior to Duke:  Four year letterwinner at Hoover High School...two-time All-America honoree (2011, 2012)...member of the 2012 USA junior team that competed at the IAAF World Jr. Championships in Barcelona, Spain...two-time New Balance Nationals Indoor High Jump Runner- Up (2011, 2012)...named to the 2011 USA Today All-America Team...2011 New Balance Nationals Outdoor champion in the high jump...four-time All-Ohio honoree...2012 Ohio Division 1 Outdoor High Jump Champion...two-time Ohio Division 1 Indoor High Jump Champion...four-time league champion in the high jump (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)...high jump record holder for Hoover High School, Stark County and Lake Eerie District...AAU National Champion in 2006 and 2007...set the AAU junior Olympic record for 12 year-olds with a high jump of 5-4.25 in 2006...four-time academic All-Ohio (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012)

Prior to Duke: Four year letterwinner at Pinecrest High School... 2012 Southeastern 4A Conference Champion in 400m dash, 300m hurdles and 1600m relay...2012 NC 4A East Regional Champion in the 400m...2012 NC 4A East Regional Runner-Up in the 300m hurdles and 4x400m relay...holds the Pinecrest High School record in the 400m and 4x400m relay...named the two-time Pinecrest High School Sprinter of the 2009, named the Pinecrest High School Rookie of the Year...member of the 4x400m relay squad that participated in the 2012 New Balance Outdoor Nationals...AP Scholar with distinction...National Merit Semi-Finalist...class of 2012 salutatorian...served as student body vice-president.
