BUIES CREEK, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team mounted a valiant comeback, but came up just short in a 19-17 setback to Campbell University this evening at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. The Blue Devils won four of the final five bouts of the match.

Campbell (3-2) jumped out to a 16-3 lead after the first five matches before Duke (0-5) stormed back with wins in the next four bouts to pull within two points. The Camels picked up a decision at 157 pounds to ice their third victory of the season.

Redshirt freshman Brandon Gambucci started Duke's comeback with a major decision victory at 133 pounds. With the match deadlocked at zero after the first period, Gambucci started the second with an escape and added a takedown for a 3-0 lead. The Mansfield, Ohio native added four more points in the final session and a point for riding time to take the 8-0 major decision over Joey Rizzolino.

Freshman Tanner Hough also garnered a big-time win for the Blue Devils at 141 pounds, beating Jordan Tolbert by major decision, 14-5. In an outstanding performance, the rookie scored seven points in the final four minutes of the match to post his seventh major decision of the season.

Trailing 16-11 with three matches remaining, redshirt senior A.J. Guardado pulled out a win with a reversal with 31 seconds left to improve to a team-best 4-1 in dual matches. Scoreless after two periods with Guardado owning a point for riding time, Mark Hartenstine took the lead 54 seconds into the final stanza with a takedown. Owning a point for riding time, Guardado needed one point to tie the match. The West Covina, Calif., native went one step further and scored on the reversal for the 3-2 triumph.

After Guardado used the late reversal to pull the Blue Devils within three, Campbell responded with a third-period victory at 157 pounds to go in front 19-14 with the final bout at 165 remaining.

At 165 pounds, Duke sophomore Ryan Harding scored on a takedown with 47 ticks left in the bout to score a 4-3 decision over Ryan Krecker. Krecker and Harding were even with two points apiece after five minutes of wrestling. Krecker opened the third period with an escape for a 3-2 advantage before Harding came up with the late takedown for his second dual match victory of the year.

Duke returns to action this weekend, Jan. 28 against Boston University and Bridgewater State.
