John Barnes
Position: Assistant Coach
Other Position: Associate Head Coach
Experience: 1st Year

On May 21, head coach Kevin Borseth completed his staff by announcing the hiring of John Barnes as Associate Head Coach for Green Bay.

"I have known John for over 15 years and throughout our careers we discussed him joining my staff on a number of occasions," Borseth said. "John understands the type of student-athlete we are looking for and is very familiar with the style of play that has been consistent with Green Bay's success."

Barnes spent the 2011-12 season as Borseth's assistant at University of Michigan, helping guide the Wolverines to its NCAA Tournament appearance and 20-12 record while compiling the program's fourth 20-win season. Barnes was also an assistant at University of Wisconsin from 2010-11 where his duties included focusing on offensive efficiency, recruiting, player development and scouting.

"I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to work for a nationally respected program like Green Bay," Barnes said. "Kevin has helped build the success of Green Bay and I'm looking forward to continuing to work with such a knowledgeable and well-respected coach."

Prior to his assistant duties in the Big Ten, Barnes was Borseth's predecessor as the head coach at Michigan Tech University from 2003-10. While at Michigan Tech, Barnes led his team to winning records every season, compiling an overall record of 156-55 while leading the Huskies to the NCAA Division II Championship five times. In addition, Barnes led his team to back-to-back Elite Eight appearances (2009 and 2010) and was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year three times in addition to earning WBCA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2010.

"John's experience and success at Michigan Tech and his knowledge gained as a head coach there will serve him well as we work together to continue building the program at Green Bay," said Borseth.

The Escanaba, Mich. native was a member of the Michigan Tech men's basketball team from 1991-95, earning a spot on the GLIAC All-Defensive Team his senior year. Following his collegiate career, Barnes played for the Kolding Basketball Club in Denmark in addition to serving as the head coach for St. Nicolai, a men's travel team in Denmark.
