MEAC To Host Cross Country Championships

The MEAC will host the 2011 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, October 29 at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) in Princess Anne, Maryland.

The championships will begin with the women's five-kilometer race at 9:45 a.m. followed by the men's eight-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m.  For complete men's and women's cross country championship information, visit Championship Central at

Norfolk State, the three-time defending MEAC men's champion, captured gold at three meets this season. Senior Josef Tessema leads the conference with a time of 24:43.91 on an 8K race. Tessema won individual titles at the Lou Onesty Invitational and UMES Lid Lifter Invite this season and earned MEAC Athlete of the Week accolades twice this year.

On the women's side, Hampton won their first title since 2006 a year ago and will vie for their fourth overall title. Sophomore Nichelle Harris has led the Lady Pirates in four 5K races this season. Her fastest time of 19:07.30 occurred at the Great American Festival Invite.

Maryland Eastern Shore's senior Eunice Jones, holds the top time in the MEAC on a 5K course this season with a time of 18:08.66 which she placed at the Delaware State Invite.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, MEAC student-athletes will wear pink racing bibs, while the head coaches will wear pink ribbon pins during the competition. The MEAC encourages fans to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness month.

The 2011 MEAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships are free and open to the public.

Maryland Eastern Shore is located on One Backbone Road in Princess Anne, Maryland. UMES will serve as hosts of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regional on Saturday, November 12.
