Texas Tech Sweeps Final Big 12 Track & Field Weekly Honors

Only two days before the start of the 2012 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Texas Tech student-athletes Gil Roberts and Shade Weygandt have been honored as the Big 12 Track & Field Athletes of the Week for competition May 2-8. It the first career weekly accolade for both athletes and the third Texas Tech sweep of the award, the first since March 22, 2011.

Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Male Athlete of the Week
Gil Roberts, Texas Tech, Sr., Oklahoma City, Okla.
Roberts ran 43.53 to win his outdoor 400-meter debut at the Red Raider Open. The time helped him to leap to the national lead in the event as he beat out 2010 European Champion Kevin Borlee. It marked Roberts' first 400-meter dash since competing at the IAAF World Championships in March shortly after winning gold at the U.S. 400-meter Championship in Albuquerque this February. Roberts is a five time All-American and is looking for his second Big 12 Championship in the 400m this weekend in Manhattan, Kan.

Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Female Athlete of the Week
Shade Weygandt, Texas Tech, Jr., Mansfield, Texas
Weygandt broke her own school record Saturday night by clearing the bar at 4.50 meters (14'-9.00"). The mark moved her to No. 2 in the country and further improved upon her lead in the Big 12. Her clearance set a new Linda and Fuller Track and Field Complex facility record as well as a meet record. Weygandt holds each of the top five marks in school history in the event and is first women's pole vault All-American in school history.
