MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team defeated Hawaii 1-0 on an own-goal in the 56th minute. Kate Brenot recorded her first-career 90 minute shutout as the Gaels improved to 4-1-1 while Hawaii dropped to 0-6.
During the own-goal sequence, Christina Tognetti and Vicki Shimkus passed the ball downfield. Kaytlyn Steele got the ball near the left box and kicked a hard cross, hitting the Hawaii defender in the knee and the ball went into the net.
The win was Saint Mary's eighth win in nine games against Hawaii and fifth straight dating back to 1998. It was the second consecutive season the Gaels shutout UH at Saint Mary's Stadium (3-0 SMC in 2010).
The Gaels outshot UH 11-6, including 5-2 in the first-half. Saint Mary's took six corner kicks compared to two by UH. Hawaii committed 10 fouls compared to five by the Gaels.
Kanani Taaca had five saves in goal for the Rainbow Wahine.
For the Gaels, Jordan Marada took four shots, two on goal. Shimkus, Steele and Sara Ives took SMC's other shots on goal.
Hawaii's Brittani Lum took three shots and a shot on goal. Karli Look, Amber Fuller and Madison Kaminski took the other UH shots.
Saint Mary's is back in action at its own SMC Tournament. The Gaels host Virginia Commonwealth at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9.
