ORLANDO, FL.--The Old Dominion University Dynasty Dance Team placed 8th in the nation this past weekend in the Universal Dance Association (UDA) Collegiate Dance Championship, held in Orlando, Florida at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The UDA Collegiate Dance Championship is the premier dance championship for Division IA, Division I, and Division II college dance teams across the nation and internationally.

The ODU dance squad advanced to the 2013 finals in the Jazz Division on Saturday evening, marking the first time in school history the team had advanced to the final round. The 8th place finish ranked ODU among the top ten schools in the nation, including national champion California State Fullerton, Hofstra, Southeastern Louisiana University, University of Northern Iowa, University of Delaware, North Dakota State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Missouri State University, University of California-Santa Barbara, and Long Beach State University.

In order to qualify and participate there are several prerequisites that must be met by each team competing. Each team must either attend a UDA Camp held at various Universities and Colleges across the country or host a private camp at their school. In addition, each team must submit a safety tape, to ensure that all dance tricks and lifts are considered safe and legal. The last video is the Spirit Tape which consists of 15% of their competition score. The spirit tape is judged prior to the competition, which consists of Community & Campus Involvement activities, halftime Entertainment footage and spirit raising techniques during game day situations. The Dynasty Dance Team received a perfect 15/15 score for its Spirit Tape submission. The dance team finished 17th in the national competition in 2012.

Congratulations go to Spirit Director Dawn Adams Baidoo and team members Brittany Hardin, Emily Barnes, Jennifer Membreno, Kelsey Rutledge, Megan Cameron, Kristin Anglin, Dominique Chambers, Shannon Blount, Anna Weishaar, Maggie Ollander, Shannon O'Hara, Kendall Smith, and Jenny Blake
