KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Oct. 16 - Southern Utah University women's volleyball dropped the second leg of its conference road trip with a four-set defeat at UMKC on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the T-Birds to 6-16 overall and 3-8 in Summit League play.
SUU jumped on the Kangaroos early, scoring five consecutive points as the first set opened. The run prompted a UMKC timeout and the break turned the tide as the 'Roos went on a 17-7 run and forced a Southern Utah timeout. UMKC maintained the momentum through the rest of the set and opened with a 25-17 victory.
The surge continued into the second set for the Kangaroos as the home team hit .481 during the frame with 13 kills and no errors on 27 attempts. The Thunderbirds tallied 15 kills, but nine errors led to a 25-15 defeat for SUU.
Southern Utah derailed UMKC's attempt at a three-set sweep despite the Kangaroos starting the third set with a 5-1 run. The Thunderbirds came back midway through the stanza to tie the game at 10-10 and 11-11 and then used a three-point run capped by a Kangaroo miscue to take a 14-11 lead. The advantage remained in the Thunderbirds' corner down the stretch with back-to-back kills by Alissa Youart and Kylie Schofield punctuating the victory, 25-22.
The teams battled through 12 ties and four lead changes in the fourth set, including a 18-18 deadlock late in the stanza. The Thunderbirds used an Analaine Pelaez-Mailoto kill and a pair of UMKC miscues to take a 21-18 lead and then a Youart kill to create a set point at 24-22. However, back-to-back points by the Kangaroos tied the game at 24-24 and the points started a 5-1 run by UMKC that wrapped up the match 27-25.
Pelaez-Mailoto led all attackers during the afternoon with 22 kills and added 14 digs for her 12th double-double in the past 14 matches. Davia Lee led all defenders with 24 digs with Gabi Mirand leading setters with 41 assists.
Southern Utah will return to the court on Thursday and Saturday with home matches against IUPUI and Western Illinois. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. with live stats and a live video stream anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com.
