BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's softball team exploded for 22 runs in two games to earn a first day sweep of Cal State Bakersfield in a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader today at Roadrunner Softball Complex.

The Gaels improved to 17-20 on the season and 6-3 in the PCSC, while CSU Bakersfield fell to 10-32, 3-7.  The two teams will return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 Noon.  Links to live statistical coverage will be provided on SMCGaels.com and updates will be provided on the Gaels' official Twitter page (@SMCGaels).

Several Gaels had banner days in the back-to-back victories.  Rebecca Sabatini went 6-for-8 with four RBI and three runs scored in the two wins, while Megan Smith went 5-for-9 with six RBI.

The Roadrunners took an early lead in game one.  CSUB loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and a single and a hit by pitch gave the Runners a 2-0 lead

Saint Mary's took the lead in the top of the fourth.  Michelle Mounts doubled to right center for the Gaels' first hit of the game and came around to score in the next at bat when R. Sabatini hit an RBI single.  After Alexis Konstantionopoulos and Nicole Arce walked, Smith hit a three-run blast over the left field fence to give the Gaels a 4-2 lead.

SMC added to the lead in the top of the sixth.  Smith singled to right field and her pinch runner Elizabeth Slaughter scored on a two-out triple by B. Sabatini to extend the Gaels lead to 5-2.

The Roadrunners got a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to close the game to 5-3. Saint Mary's then blew the lead wide open in the top of the seventh with five more runs and CSU Bakersfield could only manage two runs in the bottom of the inning to give the Gaels the 10-5 win.

Smith led Saint Mary's at the plate in game one with a 3-for-4 day and four RBI.  R. Sabatini also went 3-for-4, while B. Sabatini and Mounts had two hits each.

Jessica Lemmon (9-9) earned the win on the mound for the Gaels after pitching 6.0 innings and giving up seven hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and three strikeouts. Kimberly Green pitched the final inning for Saint Mary's, and gave up the two runs but finished the game off with a strikeout.

The second game was all Gaels from the opening batter.  Saint Mary's bolted out to a five-run lead in the top of the first inning.  With two runners on base, R. Sabatini singled to left center scoring Amelia McIntosh for the game's first run.  R. Sabatini scored when Mounts doubled to centerfield, then, with bases loaded, Arce hit a shot down the leftfield line to empty the bases and give the Gaels a 5-0 lead.

Saint Mary's added two more runs in the third inning when Arce blasted a home run over the left centerfield wall to give the Gaels a 7-2 lead.  McIntosh added a sac fly RBI in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-3.

In the seventh inning, with runners on first and second, R. Sabatini doubled to left field and raced to third on the throw to push SMC's lead to 10-5.  She scored when Smith doubled to centerfield and the fourth run of the inning crossed the plate with pinch-runner Alexis Konstantinopoulos scored from third on a wild pitch for the game's final run.

SMC pitcher Britany Linton moved to 7-7 on the season with the win.  She allowed five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in five innings.  Sarah Lira pitched the final two innings, struck out two batters and allowed just a single run.

Saint Mary's will return to action next weekend with another four-game PCSC road series at Santa Clara.  The Gaels and Broncos will play doubleheaders on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22.
