SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- After registering one of the most successful seasons in school history, the Saint Mary's athletics program set a milestone last week when it was recognized by the West Coast Conference as having the best men's sports program in the league.

Propelled by a school-record three WCC team championships - men's soccer, men's basketball, and men's golf - Saint Mary's was awarded the WCC's Men's All-Sports Trophy for the first time.  The Gaels accumulated 35 points to best second place San Diego by 2.5 points.  The program's previous best finish was a second-place effort in 2008.

"It has been an incredible year for Saint Mary's athletics and it is a tribute to our excellent student-athletes that we are able to perform at such a high level," said Mark Orr, the College's director of athletics.  "The current era of Gael athletics is defined by excellence on the field of competition, in the classroom and in other endeavors that are consistent with the Lasallian mission.  There is no reason why we cannot continue to excel in all phases of our students' college experience."

Overall, San Diego finished atop the Commissioner's Cup standings with 76.5 points, besting league newcomer Brigham Young University and third place Pepperdine.  Saint Mary's finished fourth with 65.0 points, followed by San Francisco, Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga.  Santa Clara and Portland rounded out the 2011-12 standings.

Saint Mary's finished fifth overall in the competition for the women's award after posting consecutive third-place finishes the previous two seasons.

The WCC Commissioner's Cup is an all-sports award presented at the end of each academic year to the league's top performing school in conference play and is based on a point system, reflecting the finish of each team in conference play. The institution with the highest point total after combining the men's and women's point totals is honored with the Commissioner's Cup.
