TOWSON, Md. - A positive attitude and relentless work ethic are at the core of every great athlete, regardless of the sport. These two attributes are even more critical when an athlete must sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules because most of the time the athlete must police himself.

When Jerrelle Benimon decided to transfer to Towson University from Georgetown, he recognized that he had to bring with him the attitude that he would work every day to improve even though he couldn't be on the court with his teammates during his sit out year.

Benimon used that time to hone his skills so that upon his return to the hardwood for game action this November, he'd be better than ever.

"This past year was a valuable experience because Mike (Burwell) and I worked really hard at it to make the most of it," said Benimon. "We got a lot of work in with the coaches. We did mostly skill work and improved on the areas that we needed to address."

At 6-foot-8, 240-pounds, Benimon has the body to bang down low and be a dominant power forward in the Colonial Athletic Association. However, after watching him shoot during warm-ups when he arrived back on campus Monday after a brief summer break, you can instantly see Benimon's perimeter game is also one of the best on the team.

"There really wasn't one area I focused on during my drills this past season, I really wanted to improve my all-around game," explained Benimon. "I play both the outside and inside game so I had to work on every position to become the player that I want to be."

With both Benimon and Tiger head coach Pat Skerry coming from BIG EAST programs, the junior knows the type of player his head coach wants him to be.

"I've always taken pride in defense and rebounding, since the day I picked up a basketball," said Benimon. "Coach obviously wants us to score, but I know at the end of the day the key to winning games is defense and rebounding."

The second summer session started this week and nearly all members of the 2012-13 Tigers were on hand. A few players, including Benimon, were able to get home for the first time in many months during June and the first summer session. Although he was able to play while at home, he was thrilled to have nearly the whole team together for the first time this week.

"I think it's going to be a different feel with having so many new guys," explained Benimon. "It won't take long to tell if things are going to be different. I know we're all here early and ready to get after it, but it's still too early to tell how it will all come together."

When asked about any personal or team goals, Benimon's response was simple.

"I hope we win," he said with a smile on his face. "That's all I want."
