TOWSON, Md. - Switching their Sunday afternoon practice to a Sunday morning workout, the Tigers staged their third practice of the season in Unitas Stadium.
Last season, Enders (below) came into pre-season camp as a virtual unknown. However, he was named as the starting quarterback two days before the season opener against Morgan State.
From that point on, he was the established starter as he led the Tigers to their first Colonial Athletic Association championship. Enders led the CAA in passing efficiency and threw for 2,081 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also Towson's second-leading rusher with 387 yards on 91 carries while scoring five TD's.
"Although we know Grant Enders is going to be the starter, we still have to get everyone ready to play," says Quarterbacks Coach Jared Ambrose. "From my perspective, it's a benefit to have Grant running the offense. It frees me up to focus on Peter Athens and the younger guys."
The Tigers have five quarterbacks in camp. A junior, Athens has the most experience. In fact, when Enders missed the game at Maryland last October, Athens was thrust into the starting role.
Behind Athens, the Tigers have a pair of red-shirt freshmen, Connor Frazier and Price Litton. A newcomer from Bishop Shanahan High School in Pennsylvania, Ryan Egolf is a first-year freshman who is one of the Tigers' quarterbacks.
"Connor and Price made a lot of progress in the spring," said Jared Ambrose. "They also did a lot of studying in the summer and they have a decent command of the huddle and the offense.
"Even though Grant is the starter, we tell everyone that they are just one play away from getting into the game," Jared Ambrose adds. "We use the Maryland game as an example of that. Pete Athens lived that and he knows how important it is to be ready."
The Tigers will hold their fourth pre-season practice on Monday afternoon.
