CHANDLER, Az. – The Tigers had 13 players honored as the 2011 Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad was announced. To earn a spot on the team, players had to carry a 3.30 GPA or higher through the first semester of the 2011-12 school year.
"The recognition by the NFHCA of our 13 team members is a true testament as to what it means to be a student-athlete,” said Towson Coach Michelle Webber. “They have continued the tradition of high standard of academic excellence of our program"
The Tigers were one of three Colonial Athletic Association schools to have 13 or more players named to the team; Old Dominion and Hofstra were the other CAA schools. There were 79 teams with players on the list this season.
Junior Megan Penza earned a spot on the team for the third straight year.
The Tigers as a team earned the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. To be eligible for the team award, the team had to have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2011-12 school year. Towson was one of 61 teams on the list for this year.
