LEXINGTON, Va. - Antonio Wood won four of the first five events in the decathlon, and VMI competitors captured the top two spots in the long jump as the Keydet men’s track and field team competed Friday at the opening day of the VMI/W&L track and field carnival, held at Washington & Lee’s Wilson Field.

Wood had the top effort in the 100-meter dash, the shot put and the long jump, but in the high jump, he cleared 2.07 meters (6’9 ½”) to not only take the event, but post a new personal best. Wood leads the decathlon by 350 points, thanks to his score of 3707 points.

The long jump saw Nate Gant take the win with a 6.93 meter leap (22’9”), ahead of runner-up teammate Ademola Titcombe (6.83 M/22’5”). In one of the later events of the day, the Keydets posted two of the top four times in the men’s 5K. Ermin Mujezinovic finished third, with a 15:05.90 time, while he just edged out teammate Noah Hagos, who clocked in officially at 15:05.91.

“I thought we had a strong day,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Our distance runners had a good day to start the outdoor year, and Antonio really showed well in the later events of the decathlon. I was also pleased with the long jump results, especially the Nate’s effort.”

Finally, Michael McDonald finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he recorded a time of 10:10.30.

VMI track and field will return to action Saturday, as the VMI/W&L Carnival concludes at Foster Stadium. Action will get underway at 8 a.m.
