VMI Swim and Dive Finishes Loyola Invite
BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams had several good times and broke a record Saturday on day two of the Loyola University H2ounds Invitational.
Sophomore Sophie Svoboda broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking fifth in 1:06.85 and also was 18th in the 200 breast in 2:34.96. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Svoboda, Sarah McDougall, Morgan Davis and Calle Biles took 11th in 1:42.82. Davis finished 30th in the 100 fly in 1:04.50 and MacDougall placed 24th in the 100 free (56.74) and 17th in the 200 (2:05.75).
Olivia Bryant was 24th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.25 and Biles placed ninth in the 1 meter diving competition (141). The 200-medley relay team of Svoboda, Davis, Biles and MacDougall finished 13th in 1:55.00 and the 400-freestyle relay team of Svoboda, MacDougall, Davis and Biles placed 12th in 3:49 flat. Isabella DeCosta paced VMI in the 200 backstroke in 2:29.76 for 20th place.
The Keydet men’s 200-yard freestyle team of Kai Green, Zach Emerson, Jacob Smilie and Ryan Schmitz was ninth in 1:26.06 and the 200-medley relay group of Smilie, Jack Sheehan, Schmitz and Emerson placed 11th in 1:37.37. Emerson was 10th in the 100 backstroke (52.86) and 13th in the 200 (1:58.68), Conner Jorgensen placed 13th in the 400 IM in 4:17.38, while Green, Andrew Mills and Smilie came in at 17th, 18th and 19th in the 100 butterfly.
Connor Doyle was 16th in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.72 and Sheehan came in 14th in the 100-breaststroke (59.82) and 11th in the 200 (2:09.71). Jorgensen swam a 17:19.25 in the 1650 freestyle and Bridger Thurston placed sixth in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 142.75. Schmitz came in 17th in the 100 free in 48.42 and Mills placed 20th in the 200 fly in 2:00.60. Green, Emerson, Sheehan and Schmitz combined to take ninth in the 400-free relay in 3:11.60.
The Keydets are back in action after the New Year, heading across town to Washington & Lee University Saturday, January 11.
