EDISON, N.J. – Freshman Mike DeBlasio was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after a six-goal week. He is the first Keydet to earn weekly plaudits from the MAAC since Tim Moran in early March 2010.
DeBlasio is one of two active VMI players to have earned the honor. Senior attackman Colin Bosse is the other Keydet to have been tabbed Rookie of the Week, earning the honors on March 23, 2009.
“Mike has been a great addition to our program. He has consistently increased his role and production within our offensive system and continues to meet the high expectations of the coaching staff," said VMI head coach Brian Anken of his first MAAC Rookie of the Week selection.
DeBlasio, who hails from Patchogue, N.Y., collected his first career weekly honors. DeBlasio posted six goals during a week in which VMI went 1-1, picking up its first win of the 2012 season. The rookie was a big part of that effort, putting up three goals against Wagner in the week’s victory while posting his second hat trick in as many games on Saturday. The Keydets (1-7) fell in the second contest in heartbreaking fashion to Siena 12-11.
His third goal of the week came on VMI’s extra man opportunity during the Wagner game. DeBlasio pushed home the Keydets lone man up goal. His marker knotted the action up 6-6, the fourth tie of the game.
Coming into the week, DeBlasio had amassed only three goals but exploded this past week. So far in his young Keydet career, DeBlasio has 12 points on nine goals a trio of helpers. He has taken 29 shots so far this season, putting 13 of those efforts on cage. When he puts his shots on goal, he scores at a 41.0 percent clip.
VMI returns to MAAC action on Saturday when it makes the long trek to Jacksonville, Fla. Game time between the Keydets and Jacksonville University is set for 1 p.m. at the Dolphins’ D.B. Milne Field.
