The Keydets will begin their first season under new coach Jennifer Fazioli with the VMI Invitational, contested Sept. 1 at the Virginia Horse Center. Unlike VMI home meets the previous few seasons, this will be an individual race, although both the men’s and women’s events will be 5K, marking a shorter distance than usual for the men.
VMI then goes to the James Madison Open on Sept. 15, a meet that will be held in New Market, Va. Of note, this meet is held the same weekend as the Big South Preview event, meaning that the Keydets will not run in the preview meet for the second straight year. The VMI harriers resume action by heading north to Lehigh, Pa. on Sept. 28 to run in the well-known Paul Short Run. It will be the Keydets’ first appearance at the Paul Short since 2009.
VMI then makes a familiar stop on Oct. 12, taking part in the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., an event hosted by Appalachian State. That will be the teams’ final tune-up before heading to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Big South Championships, an event that will be hosted by Winthrop on Oct. 27.
The Keydet season wraps up Nov. 9 with the NCAA Regional Championships in Charlotte, N.C.
VMI’s teams return 2011 Big South Women’s Freshman of the Year Emily Dinning, as well as Jenna Moye, Leah Schubel and Michelle Church on the women’s side, while Cabell Willis, Will Thompson and others are back for the VMI men.
