MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Noah Hagos finished third in the 10,000-meters, earning his first career all-conference honor on the track and pacing the VMI men’s track and field team on day one of the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, contested Thursday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Hagos finished third in a personal best time of 31:18.98, and continued his breakthrough season after earning All-Big South honors in cross country as well. On this night, Hagos would run with the lead pack throughout before briefly going to the lead with four laps remaining. He was surpassed shortly thereafter, but made a slight comeback over the final 600 meters to pass Liberty’s David Ricksecker for third and ensure the all-conference honor.
Also scoring Thursday was Antonio Wood, who notched two points in the long jump. Wood’s best jump of the day was a 7.00 meter effort (22’11 ¾”) to place seventh and edge into the scoring column. Wood, of course, also was competing in the decathlon on the Championships’ opening day, and wound up third after five events. The junior posted the leading marks in the high jump (1.95 M/6’4 ¾”) and the long jump (7.20 M/23’7 ½”), with the long jump mark setting a new outdoor PR for Wood. He sits 60 points out of first place with five events remaining.
Overall, the Keydets sit in a tie for sixth in the current team standings, deadlocked with Winthrop at eight points apiece. The teams lead UNC Asheville (4) and Campbell (3), while Radford has yet to score. Liberty and Coastal Carolina are tied for the lead with 27 markers apiece, while Gardner-Webb (17), Charleston Southern (13) and High Point (10) round out the standings.
“All of our athletes competed well today,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Tomorrow is moving day, the day to set up for Championship Saturday. We need to qualify well tomorrow, and take advantage of the areas that we can score in. I am pleased with where we are, but this meet has a long way to go.”
The 2012 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships will resume Friday at 1 p.m. in Myrtle Beach.
