ATHENS, Ga. – The VMI women’s swimming and diving team sits in 11th place after the opening day of the 2012 CCSA Championships, contested on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

After Thursday’s proceedings, the Keydets have 26 points, four above the total of Howard (22). North Carolina A&T and Campbell are also within striking distance for the Keydets, as they have 32 and 40 markers respectively. Florida Gulf Coast is dominating the meet with 263 points, while Liberty is second with 179 markers. North Florida (124), Georgia Southern (110), Davidson (106), College of Charleston (89) and Gardner-Webb are grouped closely together as the third through seventh-place teams, while Radford is eighth with 52 points.

The Keydets saw two of their talented freshmen in action Thursday, as Heather Magill and MacKenzie Perkins were both in the pool. Perkins just missed her own program record in the 50 free, recording a time of 25.88, good for 37th in the fastest 50 field in CCSA history. Meanwhile, Magill was 17th in her conference debut, the 1-meter diving event. Magill scored 162.30 points in the competition.

VMI swimming and diving will return to action Friday, as day two of the CCSA Championships gets underway at 10 a.m.
