Cottam All-MAAC, Mello All-Rookie
BALTIMORE, MD-Rider's University's Abi Cottam was named to the First Team and Amber Mello was named to the All-Rookie Team when the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its 2011 Women's Soccer Awards Thursday evening.
Cottam, a junior from Leominster, England, led the MAAC in goals (14), assists (11) and points (39). In Division I, Cottam ranks eighth in the nation in assists per game, ninth in points per game and 17th in goals per game.
"That's great that Abi was recognized by the conference coaches," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "She was the leading scorer in the league so it was well deserved. She was a Second Team All-MAAC pick last year so to see her get First Team honors this year is great."
Mello, a freshman from Mattituck, N.Y, played in 17 games for the 9-6-4 Broncs, starting 15, and compiled two goals and an assist from her midfield position.
"Amber played every conference game at center midfield and did very well, which is not easy for a freshman," Hounsome said. "That is a position that is sometimes not easily recognized so for her to be honored is outstanding."
Mello scored two goals on just eight shots for a team-high .250 shooting percentage.
In 45 career games, Cottam has compiled 22 goals and 19 assists for 63 points. Her point total is fourth most ever at Rider, as is her total of goals, while her assist total is just one shy of the Rider record.
An Academic All-America candidate, Cottam owns a 4.0 grade point average as a Psychology major and was also named to the MAAC All-Academic team along with sophomore Becca Kape (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), sophomore Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's), junior Demi Mello (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck), junior Meghan Mohr (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem), junior Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter), junior Kelly Sandefur (Melbourne, Australia/Carey Baptist Grammar), junior Kate Stevens (Deddington, England/Chenderit), junior Claire Thompson (East Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) and sophomore Carolyn Wiley (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape).
