Mary Beth Riley '91 - A multi-letter winner in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, at the time of her induction she held three school records. In her freshman season she was recognized as the Griffs top runner. Riley was presented with the first NCAA Woman of the Year award in 1991 after battling Hodgkin's disease in 1988. That same year Riley also won the ECAC Award of Valor. In the eight months of chemotherapy, Riley continued to run and compete. In the fall of 1990 she finished eighth overall as Canisius won its first MAAC cross-country title. That winter she was a member of the record-setting 3,200-meter outdoor relay unit, the record-setting 3,200-meter indoor relay unit and in January of 1991, she set the school's 800-meter indoor record of 2:24.5. Riley was named to the MAAC All-Academic team three straight semesters. The Buffalo, N.Y. native graduated the college summa cum laude with degrees in English and Spanish and was a member of both the National Jesuit Honor Society and the National English Honor Society. Riley was also awarded the Asturias Award for Distinction in Spanish.
