Jacque (Jake) E. Austin  ('50) - Played both football and baseball at Canisius, earning four letters on the gridiron and three on the diamond...Was also recruited by the Griffs and Niagara to play basketball...After serving in World War II, Austin enrolled at Canisius and played in every varsity football game from 1946-49...Led the Griffs to three consecutive Little Three titles and a bid in the 1948 Great Lakes Bowl, the school’s only appearance in a bowl game...Earned second-team All-Little Three honors in 1947 and first-team accolades in 1948 after averaging 6.5 yards a carry...Named by The Buffalo Evening News and The New York World Telegram to the second-team All-Western New York in 1948...Also led Canisius in scoring in 1949 and registered all four touchdowns in a 28-26 upset win over Youngstown College....Austin pitched and played in the outfield on the Canisius baseball team and posted a career batting average of over .400...Went on to play professional baseball in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ organization and was a member of the first class of inductees into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame.
