CEDAR CITY, Utah, July 9 – Former Southern Utah University pitcher Joseph Karlik has signed with the Kansas City Royals and is set to play the season with club’s minor league affiliate in the Arizona League.

Karlik joined the Thunderbird baseball team last fall after previously pitching at Azusa Pacific. This spring he quickly became a member of the starting rotation where he racked up 57 innings on the mound and gave up the fewest total runs of any SUU starter (44).

As a senior at SUU, native of Colorado Springs, Colo. recorded 20 strikeouts and pitched two complete game victories including a shutout at North Dakota State. The hard-throwing right-hander also had an impressive outing at Saint Mary’s to start the year, striking out four batters over six scoreless innings.

Karlik has already made one appearance on the mound for the Arizona Royals, recording one scoreless inning of relief. He becomes the second Thunderbird pitcher to receive a minor league deal in the past two years following Keli’i Zablan who signed with the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2011 season.
