LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 18 – Southern Utah’s women’s tennis team evened its Summit League record at 1-1 Friday afternoon with a 6-1 win over IUPUI.
The Thunderbirds cruised through doubles with Ksusha Nazarova and Ollia Tatarchenko winning 8-1 over Alisha Cummings and Danielle Haefele at No. 1, Alexandra Ivanova and Kirrily Burden taking an 8-2 win over Vanessa Whyte and Lee Matthews at No. 2 and Danica Ingwaldson and Afton Staheli shutting out Jessika Bays and Shelby Hullett, 8-0, at No. 3.
Nazarova then made quick work of Hullett in a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles while Ivanova was cruising past Haetele, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2. Burden then sealed the win for the Thunderbirds with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Cummings at No. 4.
Ingwaldson made it 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Matthews at No. 4, and with the match decided Staheli took an 11-9 super tie-breaker third set to complete a 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 win over Bays at No. 6.
The only blemish on the day for the Thunderbirds came at third singles, where Tatarchenko suffered her first loss of the season, a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 setback against Whyte. Tatarchenko had opened the season with five wins prior to Friday’s loss.
“This was a nice win for us,” SUU Coach Lenny Lee said. “Olia’s loss was disappointing but our first two players had very strong games and we were able to get wins from four, five and six as well.”
SUU improved to 4-2 on the season, 1-1 in Summit League play, while IUPUI dipped to 1-16 and 0-3.
