GOODYEAR, Ariz., March 22 - Nic Booth was in 16th place and Southern Utah was 14th after the first round of Denver's Desert Shootout, which is being played at the par 72, 7,015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course.

Booth was in a group of 11 players who shot one-under par 71 in the first round to sit seven shots off the pace of San Diego's Alex Ching, who fired 64. SUU's Jeff Evans and Brad Millard were another three shots back, at 2-over 74 and tied for 48th place, while Sammy Cole was 68th at 76 and Jordan Orth was 82nd at 77. SUU's Jake Holt, playing as an individual, was tied with Orth at 77.

As a team SUU shot 295, 21 shots off the pace of first-round leader BYU but just seven shots behind Denver, Nebraska and Kansas, who were tied in seventh at 288. Boise State was 10th at 289, Kansas State was at 290, New Mexico State was at 293 and Idaho was a shot up on SUU at 294. SUU held a one-shot lead on Creighton, which finished the first round at 296.

Round two of the tournament begins Friday at 7:30 a.m. (MST), with SUU's first tee time set for 8:15.

The tournament concludes Saturday.
