CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University softball will host South Dakota State this weekend in a three-game conference series as the Thunderbirds look to climb the Summit League standings. SUU is currently in fourth place in the league with a record of 11-7, but have the chance to move to as high as second with a sweep of the Jackrabbits.
Southern Utah has won each of its conference series at home this season, including a series sweep of Oakland to begin its Summit League slate. The T-Birds have also posted series victories over South Dakota and UMKC at home this season. Conversely, South Dakota State have only won a single conference series this year, capturing two of three against South Dakota at home in Brookings.
The Thunderbird offense continues to lead the Summit League in batting average with a league-best .308 clip at the plate. SUU also boasts the top individual batter with Mikkel Griffin tops in the conference with a .429 average. Terysa Dyer (.375) and Tessa Loewen (.338) also appear in the league’s top ten at No. 5 and No. 9, respectively.
Not to be outdone, the Southern Utah pitching staff has made its own headlines lately with Danielle Axe throwing a no-hitter against IPFW last weekend. As a group, SUU carries an ERA of 3.62 with Heather Black leading the way with a 2.70 ERA and a team-best 113 strikeouts.
Southern Utah and South Dakota State will begin the three-game series this weekend with a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at Noon. The teams will wrap up the weekend with the series finale on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Fans can follow each of the games via live stat links that are anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com.
