CEDAR CITY, Utah - March 9 - Southern Utah University gymnastics' 24-meet winning streak against the Utah State Aggies came to an end on Friday night as the Thunderbirds fell 194.200-193.700. The loss came by way of three falls on the balance beam as SUU scored a 47.175 on the event.

"That was definitely the turning point in the meet," head coach Scott Bauman said. "That kind of performance is inexcusable and we train better than that. One bad rotation is the difference between winning and losing."

The Thunderbirds began the meet on the winning side, leading the Aggies after the first two rotations 97.650-97.250. The advantage came by way of consistent performances on vault and bars with Southern Utah gymnasts scoring at least a 9.750 or higher on each event.

Freshman Rochelle Bernier led the T-Birds on vault with a 9.800 and was followed by three more freshmen as Brittney Jensen, Jamie Armijo and Ana Jaworksi each tallied a 9.775. Caitlin Kennedy's 9.750 rounded out the team score of 48.875.

Bernier was also among the leaders on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.750 and tying seniors Lauren Jeffrey and Brooke Cersosimo with that mark. Armijo also tallied a 9.750 and the quartet joined Alyssa Click, who scored a team-best 9.775 on the event, for the eventual team score of 48.775.

Utah State began its meet with a 48.600 on vault and a 48.650 on the uneven and garnered event champions on both events with Sarah Landes and Paige Jones tying for first on vault with a 9.825 and Rebecca Holliday finishing first on bars with a 9.800.

The wheels on Southern Utah's victory bus came off during the third rotation as the Thunderbirds encountered three falls, having to count two and a fourth routine that was scored at a 9.325. Jaworski and Kennedy were the lone highlights for Southern Utah, scoring a 9.775 and a team-best 9.825, respectively. Kennedy finished first on the event, snapping a four-meet streak that saw the Thunderbirds without an individual title in competition.

Kennedy narrowly missed a second title on the night, finishing tied for second on floor with teammates Lauren Jeffrey and Armijo with matching 9.800's. The mark was a personal best for Armijo as Bernier also finished with a personal-best mark of 9.750. Jaworksi's 9.725 was the final mark to count towards Southern Utah's team score of 48.875.

Utah State matched the Thunderbirds' 48.875 on floor during the third rotation, but came away without the mishaps on beam that beset Southern Utah, scoring a 48.075 in the final rotation to secure the victory.

SUU was without an all-arounder for only the second time this season as Paige Jones of Utah State took home that title with a 38.975.

Southern Utah will wrap up its 2012 home season next weekend when the Thunderbirds host Boise State University on "Senior Night". Cerosimo, Jeffrey and Anna Schumacher will each be honored following the meet for their contributions to SUU gymnastics during their four years in Cedar City.
