CHANDLER, Ariz., April 9 - Monica Jung was in sixth
place and Southern Utah was in seventh as a team after the first day of play at
the 24-team Wyoming Cowgirl Classic, being held at the par 72, 6,184-yard
Ocotillo Golf Resort
Jung shot an opening round 72 to sit at even par and in a
three-way for sixth place while teammate Brittany Edwards was tied for 28th
another three shots back. SUU's Kaohi Loo shot 76 for a share of 37th
place, while Jamie Coking Millard was in 52nd after a round of 77 and Kacy Buckner was 110th at 83.
Iowa's Kristi Cardwell and Colorado State's Brianna Espinoza
were tied for the individual lead at 4-under par 68.
The Thunderbirds shot an even 300 as a team to sit 11 shots
behind first-round leader Iowa (289) but just two shots out of fifth place, where Seattle and Xavier
were tied at 298. Colorad State (292). Sacramento State (294) and Nevada (295)
occupied the second-through-fourth spots.
SUU was one shot up on UTEP (301), with a two-shot advantage
on Wichita State with New Mexico State and Boise State tied in 11th at
Round two tees off Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. (MST), with SUU's
team slated to begin taking the course at 7:30.
