Softball Defeats Evansville 6-4 to Claim Series Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Creighton softball team defeated Evansville 6-4 to win its conference-opening series at the Purple Aces’ Cooper Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Creighton (16-9, 2-1 MVC) fell behind 3-0 early to Evansville (7-13, 1-2 MVC) but a three-run homer by Amy Baker evened the game before the Bluejays took control of the game in the sixth inning. Junior Blair Lowe led the CU offense going 3-for-3 at the plate with a trio of singles.

The home run by Baker increased her career total to 52 and matched the all-time Missouri Valley Conference record set by Illinois State’s Abby Olson in 2011. Baker owns 11 home runs this season to lead the conference.

Baker extended her new career RBI Creighton record as well, moving to 151. With three RBI on Saturday, Baker moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time MVC RBI career list just six shy of the record of 157 held by Illinois State’s Heather Stella since 1999.

Junior Becca Changstrom started in the circle for the Bluejays. She earned her second complete-game win of the weekend allowing just five hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 UE batters.

Evansville started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of singles put two runners on before the Bluejays posted two outs but a Creighton error allowed a UE run to score and started a two-out rally by the Aces. A two-RBI single scored another pair of UE runs before Changstrom recorded a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Neither team scored in the second frame before Creighton tied the contest at 3-3 in the third.

Junior Ellen Homan ignited a CU two-out rally with a bunt single. Dike followed with a single up the middle before Baker’s record-tying three-run homer to tie the score.

Creighton took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, junior Cantu reached base after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Cassie Sharon came into the game as a pinch runner. Lowe followed with a single down the left field line. Sophomore Bri Lingl reached on a UE error allowing a run to score to give CU a 4-3 lead.

Lowe scored shortly thereafter on a groundout from freshman Kelsey Allender to make it 5-3. Another UE error allowed Lingl to score and increase the Bluejay lead to 6-3 before Evansville recorded a final out.

Evansville got one back in the bottom of the frame. A single and Creighton error put runners in scoring position with no outs. A UE run scored on a CU miscue on a throw from home plate to third base to yield the final result.

Changstrom improved to 11-4 on the season with the win.

Creighton steps out of conference play to travel to South Dakota for a Wednesday doubleheader.
