GROVELAND, Fla. (September 15, 2010) – Rollins and arch rival Florida Southern, two of the nation’s top collegiate water ski programs, faced head to head over the weekend to open the 2010 season.

The Mocs bested the Tars in both days of the event, winning 1430-1365 on Saturday and 1450-1350 on Sunday.

For the men on day one, newcomer Drew Phillips finished third in the overall competition while Grigorious Sarantis was third.

Sarantis was the winner in slalom, clearing 2.5 buoys at 38 feet off with Phillips getting three at 32 off and tying for fourth. Drew Doty finished seventh (5 @ 28 off), Drew Williams eighth (4 @ 28 off) and Billy Shugart 10th (4.25 @ 28 off).

Phillps took first in tricks, scoring 1580 points and was fifth in jumps with a distance of 121 feet.

The Tars women won the day one competition over FSC, 790-500. Elfina Cuglievan was the overall champion with a score of 240. Geena Krueger took third and Michaela Cooper fourth.

Rollins was dominate in slalom and took four of the top five spots. Cuglievan won with two buoys at 38 off, finishing just ahead of Cooper who got one on the same rope. Michale Briant was fourth (2 @ 35 off) and Krueger was fifth (5 @ 32 off).

Briant won the tricks competition with a score of 3230 while Krueger scored 1360 and took third. Cuglievan (810) and Clementine Leger (770) were fourth and fifth, respectively.  Cuglievan sailed a distance of 129 feet and won jumps while Krueger was second with 122 feet.

On day two, Phillips again led the Tars, tying for third overall while Sarantis was fifth.

Sarantis won slalom, getting three buoys at 38 feet off while Phillips was second after getting three at 35 off. Doty finished eighth with four buoys at 28 off.

In tricks, Sarantis tied for third with a score of 660 and Phillips was sixth to complement a runner-up finish in jumps with a distance of 131 feet.

Krueger and Cuglievan led the way for the Rollins women, tying for second, while Cooper finished fourth.

Cooper scored one buoy at 38 off to finish second in slalom while Briant was third (4 @ 35 off). Cuglievan and Krueger each scored 2.5 at 35 off and tied for fourth.

In tricks, Briant ran away with the tricks competition, scoring 4160 points in a dominate performance. Krueger (1360) was fourth, Cuglievan (1190) third and Cooper (880) fourth. Cuglievan won jumps with a distance of 132 feet while Krueger was second at 126 feet.

The Rollins men’s and women’s water ski teams will be back in action October 2-11 at the NCWSA East Regional Championships in Jasper, Georgia.
