CORPUS CHRISTI – The run for the Bearkat tennis team came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the Kats fell in the finals of the Southland Conference Championship match to Central Arkansas.

In the first finals appearance in school history, the Kats once again fell behind early, losing the doubles point for the third straight day. Unlike the previous two matches however, the Kats weren’t able to make it up in singles.

They got down early, dropping the opening set at Nos. 1, 3 and 5, and despite a late rally, they weren’t able to overcome the early losses, falling 4-2.

“We just dug too big of a hole for ourselves,” said head coach Rob Hubbard. “You can do that against a very good team like UCA. I was proud of how we continued to fight, it was just too much for us to overcome.”

After losing the doubles point, the Kat fell behind 2-0 after Roos Gerritsen fell at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Petra Kaszas got the Kats their first win coming back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to win in three, taking both the second and third sets 6-2. After a loss by Karla De La Luz Montalvo at No. 3 singles, Lusine Chobanyan closed out her match in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5 to get the match to 3-2.

But a loss at No. 1 by Sahaja Yamalapalli in three sets, closed out the match for UCA. The only other match on the court was Isidora Zivkovic who was leading her match at No. 2 singles.

“I was proud of what we did here this weekend,” Hubbard said. “First beating Corpus on their home court when no one thought we would, and then beating ACU who was the No. 1 team when no one thought we would says a lot about this group. We will be back and they will learn from this.”
